- Basauri will host the start and finish of the second stage of the Itzulia 2024
Basauri hosted the presentation event today announcing details for the start and finish of the second stage of the Itzulia 2024. The event took place at the Social Antzokia Theatre in Basauri and was attended by Asier Iragorri, Mayor of Basauri, and Alaitz Biritxinaga, Director of Itzulia Women.
During the presentation, Asier Iragorri expressed his satisfaction at this great women’s sporting event coming to the municipality this year, a year in which Basauri has been named European City of Sport and encouraged the people of Basauri and cycling fans in general “to enjoy this event that will congregate the best cyclists on the international scene on our streets”. “Encouraging the development and visibility of women’s sport is one of our priorities as a City Council and hosting this event provides us with an opportunity for its promotion”, he added.
Alaitz Biritxinaga commented at the event that “the Itzulia Women is an international class sporting event. A fact recognised by Basauri in its decision to host the start and finish of stage two. This Saturday 11 May, young people aspiring to reach the summit of cycling can experience the World Tour atmosphere first hand”.
Basauri will welcome the peloton on 11 May. Starting and finishing in front of the Social Antzokia Theatre, the stage will likely be the most exciting of this year’s race. With just 104 kilometres, 3 climbs and a finish with several climbs and descents that will surely determine the stage winner. It may make all the difference to the general classification if, during the final 10 kilometres, riders are not well positioned or if their legs cannot cope with the potential changes of pace.
Traffic restrictions
As a consequence of the second stage of the Itzulia Women starting and finishing in Basauri, on Saturday 11 May from 10:00 to 11.00 am and from 12:45 to 1.30 pm (approximate schedule) Lehendakari Agirre Street will be closed to traffic from the Nagusia junction to the municipality’s exit by the Ariz bridge. This traffic restriction means that the streets Doktor Jose Garai and Menéndez y Pelaio, whose exit converges at Lehendakari Agirre, will also be closed during this period.
