The official presentation of the Itzulia Women 2024 took place today at the San Sebastian Town Hall. The event was attended by Eneko Goia, Mayor of San Sebastian; Joseba Urkiola, Sports Director at EITB; Marta Pastor, Sports Director at the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa; Mikel Arrillaga, Head of Brands and Markets at HAZI, Alaitz Biritxinaga, director of the Itzulia Women and Julian Eraso, president of OCETA among others.
Eneko Goia, the mayor of Donostia-San Sebastián, underlined “the exponential growth that women’s sport in general, and cycling in particular, has experienced in recent years. Growth that Donostia, in partnership with Basque Cycling Organisations has contributed towards with its clear commitment to making the female Donostia Klasikoa possible, and by supporting the change of format and hosting the final stage of the Itzulia Women, in which female cyclists everywhere want to participate”.
In this sense, Goia assured that “this year’s Itzulia Women will give us a new opportunity to see the best cyclists of the day compete for one of the most prized titles on the calendar. Even more so following the spectacle witnessed at the great events of the Tour of Flanders or Paris Roubaix. The final stage of the Itzulia will give us the chance to relive such great duels live before a dedicated fan base, considered to be the best in the world, who I’m sure will give their all to cheer on every one of the riders, as they always do”.
Given the presence of the local councils, institutions, sponsors and friends of the race, Alaitz Biritxinaga took the opportunity to “express gratitude for the support and help we have received to make this race possible. The race is young but has a bright future and is growing rapidly. We hope to be able to continue gaining support for this great race and consolidate its position as a major event on the calendar”. She also added that “this year the Itzulia Women wished to further promote women’s cycling by collaborating with the RFEC’s Women In Bike project to co-organise a cycling meeting whereby 30 cyclists will be able to see the professionals reach the finish line on the Boulevard”.
Marta Pastor, the Director of Sports at the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa, commented “we are delighted to once again welcome the best cyclists in the world to the third edition of the Itzulia Women. This event has proven to be a benchmark of excellence in international women’s cycling, notable not only for the level of its competitors and the excitement they provide at each stage, but also for its message of equality and empowerment. The Itzulia Women is a place where women can shine and demonstrate their talent on equal terms. It inspires us to break down barriers and move towards a future where sport is truly inclusive and equitable for all”.
Dressing the champions
Gobik will once again dress the winners of the Itzulia Women. The 2024 edition includes four designs, the yellow jersey for the winner sponsored by EITB, the mountain jersey (Eusko Label), consistency jersey (Diputación Foral de Gipuzkoa) and best young rider jersey (Euskadi Basque Country).
Three stages of the world’s best cycling
The Itzulia Women 2024 will take place from 10 to 12 May between Vitoria-Gasteiz and Donostia-San Sebastian over a total of three stages. The 3rd edition of the race will visit the towns of Vitoria-Gasteiz, Elgoibar, Basauri and Donostia-San Sebastián, covering 358.9 kilometres.
Cyclists such as the reigning Itzulia Women winner Marlen Reusser (Team SD Worx – Protime) are expected to line up at the start in Vitoria-Gasteiz on 10 May, as well as the following riders: Demi Vollering (Team SD Worx – Protime), Katarzyna Niewiadoma and Elise Chabbey (Canyon// SRAM Racing), Evita Muzic and Marta Cavalli (FDJ – SUEZ), Amanda Spratt (Lidl-Trek), Ella Wyllie and Mavi García (Liv-Alula-Jayco), Ane Santesteban (Laboral Kutxa – Fundación Euskadi) and Olivia Baril (Movistar Team) among others.
