- Elgoibar debuts as finish line in the Itzulia Women
Details of the stage one finish of the Itzulia Women 2024 were today presented in Elgoibar. The event took place in the Elgoibar town hall and was attended by Maialen Gurrutxaga, mayoress of Elgoibar, and Alaitz Biritxinaga, director of the Itzulia Women, who shared their assessment of what the finish line could mean for the municipality and the Itzulia Women.
The mayor of Elgoibar, Maialen Gurrutxaga, highlighted that “the arrival of Itzulia Women to Elgoibar represents a moment of pride and joy for our municipality. It reflects our firm commitment to gender equality and empowerment through sport. This event is a clear example of how, through local politics, we can promote great changes and highlight the role of women in all spheres, including highly competitive sports. We are delighted to offer a platform where sports spirit and passion for cycling come together in a celebration that promises to leave an indelible mark on Elgoibar. We are proud to be part of this movement and to use our city as a stage for the promotion of values that allow us to move towards a more inclusive and equitable society. “I invite all citizens to encourage cyclists and participate in all the activities that we have organized together with local agents and associations.”
Alaitz Biritxinaga commented at the event that, “we are very happy that Elgoibar has joined the Itzulia Women project. It is a young and fast-growing race. As we have seen in recent years, the event is attended by the best cyclists in the world, who come to win. Making the Itzulia Women a benchmark international event”.
The race is set to arrive in Elgoibar on 10 May, and the first rider to cross the finish line will get to wear the initial yellow jersey of the Itzulia Women 2024. It is this year’s longest stage, with the highest cumulative elevation gain. Despite having just 3 scoring passes, it includes plenty of climbs and descents. A favourable day for a breakaway either before or during the Olaeta pass. The last few kilometres climb steadily uphill on a continuous false flat until the finish line in Elgoibar.
